70 Stitches and 7 Inch Scar...

by A
(Illinois, USA)

I tripped over a worn out safety mat that had rolled up edges on it. I fell into a press with sheet metal resulting in a severe cut to my right forearm. I received 70 stitches in the ER following the accident. I still have significant pain with numbness and tingling in my ring and last fingers. My scar is approximately 7 inches long.

Any ideas on what a case like this is worth in Illinois?

ANSWER for "70 Stitches and 7 Inch Scar...":

A (Illinois, USA):

I'm presuming this was an on the job injury. Before any discussion of a settlement award can take place you'll really have to complete your medical treatment and therapy.

Unfortunately, under workers compenation laws in Illinois and every other state an injured worker is not entitled to an award for his or her pain and suffering. Instead there will be a determination to see if your injury is one which will be disabling, whether temporarily or permanently.

The permanency of the scarring will probably not affect your ability to work. As a result, you can't expect a substantial settlement award.

You would be best served by contacting an experienced workers compensation attorney. Most will not charge any fee for an initial office consultation. Their fees are only paid if they succeed in your case. Even then their fee is statutory (controlled by law) and will be paid by the insurance company.

The above is general information. Laws change frequently, and across jurisdictions. You should get a personalized case evaluation from an attorney licensed in your state. Find a local attorney to give you a free case review here, or call (888) 647-2490.

Best of luck,
