Client Fell and Broke Her Shoulder Outside Our Salon...
by Ysidro (Encino, CA, USA)
We have a hair salon and lease our space in a large building. A client fell outside of our salon on the steps. The building property owners or managers are doing construction and didn't board up an area where there was a hole.
She broke her shoulder and had an attorney send a letter to the management company. Being that she fell outside of our salon because of their construction, are we at all liable for this client's accident? Thanks.

From the facts you present it doesn't appear you have any liability. If you have business liability insurance contact your insurance company immediately. Your policy most probably requires you to notify them if there is the possibility of a lawsuit.
It would be a good idea to contact the injured party's attorney. Take a pre-emptive strike. Tell the attorney you would be happy to be a witness against the management company.
If that option isn't viable then contact the management company and demand they send you an indemnification letter. That's a letter stating in the event you or your company is sued over this matter, they will pay for your legal defense. And in the event you are sued and the injured party takes a judgment against you, they will agree to pay all legal fees for an appeal...and if an appeal is not sought to pay any judgment against you.
