Diffuse Disk Bulge from Lifting Office Equipment…

Submitted By: Aaron (Flat Rock, Michigan, USA)

Last year I was working as a janitor. I was asked to lift some file cabinets and move office equipment upstairs. As soon as we started moving cabinets and desks I felt back pain. It lasted the whole time and continued afterwards. I only just recently went to the hospital.

First they couldn’t tell me what it was. Then I saw a surgeon and he told me I had a diffuse disc bulge. I asked how could it happened and he said from lifting heavy objects. He ordered physical therapy but it didn’t help. My job is trying to put me back to work without restriction but I’m still in a lot of pain. What can I do? Thanks.

Dear Aaron,

There are those times when an employer doesn’t want to agree to allow their employee to take off time from work. The poor employees are too often forced to choose between receiving appropriate medical care and retaining their jobs.

Hopefully your employer will be one who cooperates. One problem you may run into is your delay in deciding whether to file a workmans compensation claim. In the State of Michigan workmans compensation regulations require a clam to be filed within 90 days of the injury. There are exceptions.

If you are truly injured and the symptoms have remained constant from the date of your injury you should not hesitate to vigorously pursue your claim.

The above is general information. Laws change frequently, and across jurisdictions. You should get a personalized case evaluation from a licensed attorney. Find a local attorney to give you a free case review here , or call (888) 647-2490.

Best of luck,
