Fell through a glass door in a Cyprus hotel…

Submitted By: Charmaine (Cyprus)

My brother went on vacation to Cyprus on Wednesday, 29th May, and when he arrived at his hotel room there was a puddle of water on the floor. We do not know where this water came from. On his way out later that day, he slipped on the water and fell, legs first, into the glass door which leads to the balcony.

The glass cut through the muscles and ligaments in both of his legs and he is now left unable to walk. The doctors at Lito Private Hospital are now helping him learn to walk again. The thing is before the fall he had been drinking, but I do not believe this contributed at all to his fall. I’m worried, however, that the fact he had been drinking will mean he will not be able to get any sort of settlement.

Will he still be able to claim? What can he do to get compensation for his injuries? Thank you.

Answer

Dear Charmaine,

You will have to contact an attorney in Cyprus. You might start by contacting the American Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus. They may be able to point you toward attorneys in Cyprus who practice personal injury law. Go to their website here: American Embassy in Cyprus.

It’s highly likely your brother’s alcohol consumption will be a factor in any personal injury claim he may assert. Although your facts didn’t mention it, it’s likely your brother was hospitalized in Cyprus immediately after his injury. A smart defense attorney will likely subpoena his blood work performed when he was hospitalized. Hopefully your brother was not intoxicated.

In the interim, do all you can to gather your brother’s medical records. You’ll need them to present to any attorneys you might contact in Cyprus. In addition, you’ll know for sure the BAC (blood alcohol concentration) of your brother at or about the time of his injury.

Good luck,

Law Guy
