I went to the gas station and made a purchase. While leaving I slipped on black ice in front of the store and was injured. I went inside and told the clerk who then called 911. Fire and rescue came and decided to call the ambulance.
The paramedics showed up and transported me to the hospital where I received x-rays of my elbow and back. My arm was placed in a splint and I was released. What can I do about this? Are they responsible for the ambulance and hospital bills?

If the ice was located on the gas station’s property there may be three legally responsible parties.
- The property owner (if separate from the owner of the gas station)
- The gas station owner
- The major oil company whose product is sold on premises
They may all be individually and collectively liable for your injuries and their resulting costs.
Start by contacting the owner of the gas station. Send the owner a certified letter asking them to pay for your ambulance and hospital bills. You have the right to ask for additional monies for your inconvenience, your out of pocket costs for your medications, the cost of the splint, etc. If you had to miss work you should be entitled to reimbursement for your lost wages.
Finally, you are also entitled to ask for an additional sum for the pain and suffering you endured at or about the time of your fall, and for any future pain and suffering.
If you need help you can consult with a personal injury attorney. Most won’t charge for an initial office consultation.
